The Super Nintendo Entertainment System was the third console to be released by Nintendo was a Fourth Generation console. It was released by Nintendo in Japan on November 21 and the rest of the world in 1991 and 1992. by 2003 it had sold 49.10 million units worldwide with the best selling areas being North and South America.

To compete with the NES, NEC created the TurboGrafx-16 in 1987, Sega doing the same in 1988 by releasing the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive. Both consoles were built on the architecture of 16-bit graphics and they offered better sound and graphics quality. Unfortunately for them, the Sega Gensis would take several years to actually become succesfull. Nintendo executives, who were in no rush to create a new console, then saw their hold on the video game market slipping.

The Console was designed by Masayuki Uemura who was the designer of the original Nintendo Entertainment System. The Super Nintendo (known as the Super Famicom in Japan) was released in Japan on Wedensday 21 November 1990, being sold at a retail price of 25,000 Japanese Yen ($210). It became an instant success with the initial shipment of 300,000 units selling out within a few hours. The resulting disturbances caused the Japanese goverment to ask Nintendo to move the releases to weekends. The release also grabbed the attention of Yakuza, the worlds biggest criminal ordginization, which caused Nintendo to make the shipments at night.
