It was released as a launch title for the Xbox 360 in March 2006 for the Xbox 360 and Windows, May 2006 for mobile phones and March 2007 for Playstation 3. In 2011 a 5th anniversary edition was released across all platforms it originally released on.
The game centres around the player trying to stop a fantatical cult known as the "Mythic Dawn" in their efforts to open the gates to a land called Oblivion. The game is open world like all the games before it, allowing the player to ignore or postpone doing the main missions of the game for an unknown amount of time whilst the player explores the land of Cyrodiil and levels up.
Development for the game began in 2002 as soon as Morrowind was released. DSuring develoment a decision was made to use the Havok Engine to improve the graphics of Oblivion compared to the graphics of Morrowind. As well as this they decided to ise the Radiant A.I. system which allowed the NPC's (Non-Player Characters) to make choices and have behaviour that was more complex than the A.I's of the previous Elder Scrolls games and also the game features fully voiced NPCs so that each NPC sounds different to the other and they seem like individuals rather than part of one program.
When it was released it sold 1.7 million copies within the first month of its release and by the time The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim was released in November 2011, the game had sold over 3.5 million copies. The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Game of the Year Edition came with the main game alongside the expansion packs Shivering Isles and Knights of the Nine.
